Menopause literally means the end of your menstrual cycle. This is a normal event in any woman’s life. This is usually characterized by hormonal changes and mood swings. This usually occurs in mid life of a woman. This is a beginning of a new phase in a women’s life.

Emotional factors in women contribute a lot for menopause. Many women experience emotional and spiritual challenges. These issues need to be dealt by providing the appropriate care and support. Some of the emotional factors in women with menopause are as follows:

Unresolved Grief: Grief is one of the common symptoms faced by women suffering from menopause. Grief may arise due to the death of a child, close relative or friend or separation from spouse. Some women can understand these symptoms immediately, while others are mystified.

Anger: Anger is another cause of emotional factors in women. A woman may feel agitated and angry on small issues. They might simply lash out for no apparent reason. This may also bring about a feeling of worthlessness.

Sexual Changes: Loss of libido, discomfort during intercourse and poor communication can also contribute to the emotional issues of women. It is very important to explore all these causes. This is a normal situation a woman might face during the menopause phase.

Depression: Women are at a higher risk for depression during menopause. This may be due to rapid fluctuations of the reproductive hormones in the body. Depression can be treated by psychotherapy or counseling.

Below are some tips on how to overcome these emotional factors in women during menopause.

Confront Your Attitudes: Menopause is a challenge for all women. You must learn to accept and deal with this aspect. This is not the end of life, but a beginning of a new phase in your life.

Eat A Well Balanced Diet: A well balanced diet combined with regular exercise can help overcome emotional issues in women. Women can include low fat, high fiber foods that are rich in phytoestrogens and calcium. These may help in relieving hot flushes.

Exercise: Regular exercises like walking, jogging etc can help in slowing bone loss. Aerobic exercise is ideal for cardiovascular health. They are also useful in maintaining and toning the muscles of your body. Exercise also helps to reduce stress and depression.

Stress Management: Stress is also one of the common emotional factors in women. Stress can interfere with the proper functioning of the adrenal glands. These glands help in the production of oestrogen after menopause. Stress management strategies like yoga, meditation etc can help relieve tension and also have a calming effect on the mind.

Counseling: Many of the emotional issues can be effectively resolved by counseling. Relaxation techniques and counseling can be very helpful in coping with anxiety. If a woman has persistent depression or other emotional issues, she can consult a psychiatric or go in for antidepressant medication.

Estrogen Treatment: This treatment is very effective for reducing the symptoms of menopause. It also prevents hot flashes and vaginal thinning of the tissues. They also help to cure depression and anxiety in women.

All the above are the various emotional factors in women during menopause. With the appropriate support and strategies, these issues can be easily resolved.
